2024 Theodore Roosevelt National Park

8/5/2024 to 8/16/2024

After leaving Dawson Creek BC Canada, we stayed in Edmonton, Alberta Canada for a few days. Then it was finally time to cross the border at Sweet Grass, Montana to be back in the lower 48. To be honest, we were a motorhome divided. I wasn’t ready, but Jeff was starting to get antsy. This was pretty surprising to me because normally I’m the one who’s all about being the one heading home where Jeff is always the one wanting to extend our adventures.

Once we crossed the border, we headed to a KOA in Great Falls, Montana. This KOA is a short distance to Sams and next door to Walmart, so it’s a great location to replenish our supplies. Since produce isn’t allowed to be brought across the border from Canada, we had used all we had prior to the border crossing.

We then travelled to Medora, North Dakota to go to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We had great expectations to see herds of bison. As we drove through the park, we finally saw one bison, JUST ONE! We tried to be satisfied with that, then in a distance we saw a herd. We managed to get a couple of pictures, but it wasn’t as good as we would have liked.

On our way out of the park we were stopped by a ranger. He told us there had been an accident where a truck had hit a piling to a bridge that we needed to cross to leave the park. Before they could open the bridge, they had to wait for an inspector to come out to make sure all was ok. He said we could wait or turn around and take the back entrance out of the park. It was going to take an additional hour and a half! Knowing that the inspection would probably take longer than our detour, we turned around.

This detour was a blessing in disguise because there was a visitor center on our way back to the campground. As we headed up the driveway to the visitor's center, we were surprised by a herd of a bison! The herd was right across from the parking lot. As we were taking a few pictures, the herd started heading toward the parking lot. The ranger started yelling to all of us to get back in our vehicles. We decided to leave before the herd overtook the lot. As we were just about to head down the driveway, the herd was only a few hundred feet away. We stopped to capture the most unbelievable photos of bison right in front of the national park sign. This was definitely a right place right time moment!

We checked out the Medora Musical. I didn’t know about this until I overheard someone inquiring about it. It was one of those should we or shouldn’t we things to do. Jeff said he didn’t care. I thought well why not? We were really glad we did! Yes, it was a musical. But yes, the music was fantastic! The show, choreography and dancers were phenomenal!

Before we left Medora, we took a ride along the Enchanted Highway. On a 32 mile stretch of road there are 7 large scrap metal sculptures.

To our surprise at the end of the road, there was the Enchanted Castle Motel, a knight and a dragon!

As we drove along the highway, we passed by miles of sunflowers and was greeted from a distance by a GIANT cow on a hillside. I’m sharing these photos because why not?

We have now checked off another state from our list. Only 5 (Minnesota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Hawaii) more states to visit!
